Dr. A. Maura Beattie

Dr. Beattie received her doctoral degree from Simon Fraser University in 1992. She was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowship and studied the assessment of violence potential.  She has been in private practice in the Nanaimo area since 1993, and has recently moved to Duncan. She has experience working in both adult and adolescent outpatient treatment centres as well as in corrections.   She has taught psychology courses at the university level and held an administrative position in an outpatient mental health facility.

Dr. Beattie provides psychotherapy to adults. She particularly enjoys, and has extensive experience in, assisting clients to overcome difficulties they are having related to trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, work-place stress, chronic pain and illness, marital conflict, and family-of-origin issues. She emphasizes working toward attaining a healthy balance in one's life to optimize happiness and satisfaction. She chooses therapeutic modalities based on the issues presented and the needs of the individuals, utilizing cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic techniques as well as hypnosis and relaxation training.

Dr. Beattie has given workshops on a number of topics as well as providing interviews to the media.  She is also a skilled assessor and completes assessments involving emotional difficulties, and medical-legal issues such as personal injury, custody and access, and criminal matters. She has testified as an expert witness in family, personal injury, and criminal proceedings.
